A nice locally operated restaurant that lays claim to the best fish sandwich I have ever had. If you are here, make sure to try the Canadian Walleye Sandwich. It's a very large walleye filet served on a wild rice speckled french roll. Phenomenal. The Northwoods Sampler also allows visitors to try a number of local delicacies. If you are aiming for something a little off the beaten path, there is an extensive number of Scandinavian items and locally procured fish, vegetables and rice. We enjoyed the well kept gardens just outside of the screened in dining area overlooking Lake Superior.

If you leave the TC in the morning, you'll start getting hungry for lunch past Duluth. We stumbled on this place on Highway 61. As you walk in you'll notice the huge gift shop right off. They have some serious jewelry there. We wanted the view, so we sat in the enclosed porch. It was a Friday, so they had an all you can eat fish fry. I'm wary of those, so I got the shephards pie. Naturally I sample. These bite size pieces had a breading where you could taste the herbs. The lightest fish I've ever tasted. Even the homemade tarter sauce was mind blowing. The coleslaw was delicious. The soup and entree came with 2 breadsticks. If these aren't homemade, they fooled me. I packed them to go they were so good. As good as the brunch sounds, go on a Friday. You don't want to miss this. The shephards was great, covered with cheese, which isn't standard to the recipe, but still delicious. Make no mistake, Norwegians are up there with the best of Italian, French, and whomever else you think are the best cooks. Come here, and you won't underestimate they're talents in the kitchen. The gift shop is loaded with jellies, jams, etc. All locally made of course. I restrained myself, and got some pure maple syrup. You could easily blow a lot of money here though. If you take a tour of the garden overlooking Lake Superior, you're gonna want one in your backyard. Of all the places I ate on this trip, this was my favorite.

I grew up in the area so I've been there through a few different owners. I will say I like it now the most but that could be because that's what I remember the best. My family and I usually go here for their Sunday brunch. Good usuals and good specialty items in the buffet. I always get the cheesy hash browns, eggs, biscuits and gravy, stuffed mushrooms and salmon. Mmm mmm mmm!!! I've had menu items but it's been while. This is definitely a favorite of my family and we try visit once in a while.

Stopped by for their Sunday brunch. Eggs, bacon, sausage, hash, salmon, stuffed shrooms, ham, hashbrowns and a salad bar. It was awesome.

Food is mediocre. The fried chicken was like Banquet frozen with very little meat. Fries are good and they have lake superior locally brewed beer View is nice.

Stopped here on a whim for lunch and glad I did, a nice menu with local favorites. Both my fiancee and I had good sandwiches, friendly service, and a great view. If driving up north shore, I recommend a stop.

Decent American food, some venison dishes that no one in our party tried. The Friday night special was unlimited fried Walleye which wasn't bad. The fries were mediocre. The local beer selection was good.

We just stumbled upon this gem today on a trip up the north coast of Lake Superior. We ordered a walleye sandwich and the prime rib and Swiss sandwich. I was hesitant about ordering the prime rib but I must say, possibly the BEST sandwich I have ever eaten. Walleye sandwich was also outstanding. Couple the excellent food with fast, friendly service, along with a killer view of the lake, and this is a SIX star restaurant!

Well, we stopped here for Sunday brunch. It was really fantastic. The cheesy hash browns are literally unmatched. I was full in about 2 minutes. All the food was delicious. It's a great place to stop on your way back from a north Shore getaway!

Phenomenal food...rating a 5 among Roadhouse-type havens...it was exceptional! May also be known as Northern Lights Roadhouse and Pub. We had omelets and blueberry pancakes; he had a classic ham and cheese...I had a honey smoked salmon with onions and mushrooms - if you liked smoked fish this is a MUST have. Perfectly crispy hash browns. Our blueberry pancake was among the best we've had; slightly crisp outside and moist inside. Cranberry wild-rice toast. And...the guy that posted "the pie...oh the pie" - there should have been more exclamation points...BEST on the north shore!!! Total bill $26 and change. Last review was 4 months ago. ..are people driving by? You shouldn't miss it!! Oh...and the view is stunning...sit in the porch or outside overlooking the garden and Lake Superior!

It pains me to start a four-star review this way, but I would have gone with Lemon Wolf if it was open. So, on to Northern Lights. The good: the wild rice soup, the pie, oh goodness, that pie. Friendly service from people you know have lived here their whole lives, and the entire town seems to come out on a Friday night. Nice lake view. The not so good: The cod was small and you can make it at home for much less and just as tasty. The salad has a weird canned mango-cherry topping that's unnecessary and detracts from the authenticity of the meal. The tartar sauce is very... tartary. The pie was delicious, but I could not determine if the fruit was fresh or frozen. I hope it's fresh, I fear it's frozen. This is right around a 3.5 star review. On the one hand, some items are just too expensive - $6.50 pints (yes, local brews, but still high), $32 for elk cutlets (if it's that expensive, just serve beef, it really doesn't matter). On the other hand, there are definitely worse places in town, and I can't judge this against a restaurant that was closed at 7:50 PM on a Friday night. So four stars it is, but I would have been interested to peek into Lemon Wolf and decide which way I'd rather have gone.

We showed up here for the brunch buffet on Sunday. They had a good selection and everything was quite tasty, especially since we had just gotten back from the BWCA. I swear everything tastes great when you just come back from camping. It was an all you can eat buffet and OMG did I eat a lot. The eggs were awesome and some of the best I've had. The fish cakes could have been better, perhaps with tartar sauce or lemon juice now that I think of it. Anyway, this place had live music as well. This is definitely worth a stop to sample the music, view and food.

A modest roadside cafe with some obvious Scandinavian roots. It's a perfect stopping point on the way to Grand Marais from the Twin Cities; pull over, eat, and pull back onto the road. Even though there is more variety in Duluth, sometimes you just don't want to stop driving quite yet. I'd rather drive as far as I can before stopping for food/pee break/gas. Matt had been here before and said the view of Lake Superior was pretty in the summer. Still deep into the cups of winter, the patio was obviously closed but I could see the potential. It was also a Friday, which meant All You Can Eat Walleye. Though the decor was charming in that "been around forever" way, it didn't indicate that the food would be any good. Still, the idea of fried fish was appealing and I was glad that Matt went for it too, making us look like a table of gluttons versus just a glutton and her boyfriend. We were each served a large plate with crinkle-cut fries, a few slices of bread, a cup of coleslaw, butter packets, and pieces of fried walleye. Could have used more carbs. Though the color palette was decidedly golden brown and unhealthy, it made for a great meal. The fries were of some Sysco/Ore-Ida provenance, but they were sprinkled with some seasoning that made them acceptable to eat. I ignored the bread and the coleslaw. The walleye was AWESOME. They were coated with a very light batter that did not interfere with the freshness of the fish. I noted some dill in the batter, which just added enough flavor and crunch. Five minutes into chowing down,, the waitress dropped off another basket of fried fish for us. That made over-eating very easy. What I thought was a mild tartar sauce was good as well, though I think it was mostly butter with a touch of relish. We arrived around 3ish, which meant that we were almost the only non-employees in the entire building (which is quite large). Thus, pretty quiet though not sure if this applies to the busier hours when normal people decide to eat. The service was friendly, the price was right, and the food was very good so if you've driving north on a Friday, be sure to stop by!

I had the salad bar and it was good. The chicken/pasta salad was good. My husband ordered the Kayaker (Walleye fried) and my son tried the Campfire (Walleye grilled) and both were okay. Our expectations were high after reading some of the reviews but we were not impressed. We learned that the walleye is not from Lake Superior, I kind of thought that for $14 for a fish sandwich that it would be. Service was good. The scenery from the tables was fantastic.

Stopped in Friday afternoon. Not very busy. Only us actually. Service very good never had to ask for anything. Burger was good, wife had BLT, kids had wings and corn dog. Everything very good not to spendy for light lunch. $15 to 25 for dinner is correct. Wife wanted me to add that the bloody Mary's are excellent. The cookies aren't bad either!

Not bad but hard to believe all the 4 and 5 star reviewers. The outdoor seating area is wonderful, you can't deny that, but the food left us wanting. On the recommendation of other Yelpers we tried the grilled walleye sandwich and the prime rib sandwich. Meh at best. The walleye was full of bones and the tartar sauce was quite bland. I think they forgot to add the horseradish to the horseradish sauce they served with the prime rib sandwich. The ciabata bun the prime rib sandwich was served on was the highlight of the sandwich. Not a good thing. The fries were good. Again, not a ringing endorsement. Total bill for the two sandwiches and two iced teas was $36. Too much for what it was. You really can't beat that outdoor seating area but they really need to work on the food.

Walked in, no one acknowledged us at all, finally had to ask if we just seat ourselves. Sat down, waited 10 minutes. No one came over, so we left. Food looked average at best but we didn't get to try it. There are better options out there.

This place has a wonderful patio with a view but the the rest is just okay. I found myself saying, "it's fine" to just about everything.

A favorite stop for the hubby and I on our twice-or-so a year trip up North. We came upon it by accident for our first visit, if I recall correctly it was a Saturday afternoon and a gorgeous summer day. We sat outside in the garden and enjoyed the view of the lake. Menu items tend to be on the expensive side with the food only being decent, at least in my opinion. Therefore I recommend everyone stop in for what I feel like is the highlight of this place, and that is the Sunday brunch (9am-2pm!). Standard food options (as in I've seen these pretty much every time) are bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs, cheesy hash browns and not cheesy hashbrowns, pancakes, and french toast. I've also seen stuffed mushrooms which I will probably never try but have heard they're good, possibly stuffed with wild rice? There's also usually a fish of some sort which I've also never had, just because I think that's an odd option for brunch...but maybe that's just me. Biscuits and gravy are good but I usually forgo those in favor of the french toast. If they're serving tomato basil soup, be sure to grab a cup! Finish your meal with homemade donuts or brownies. Decor is your typical Scandanavian/Northshore/cabin/woodsy style. Service has always been speedy and the servers themselves smiling and polite.

Stopped in for a light meal on a Sunday evening. They were open until 9 which was nice. Beautiful gardens beside the patio where we dined. Food we ordered was very good but not "outstanding." Well, the pie was pretty amazing. Had to order cheese curds for our Texas friends that were visiting and they were good along with the wings. The big surprise was the kids chicken fingers. Very good with tender chicken breast and definitely made there. And did I mention the pie? It was a delicious way to end a light meal and a day on the north shore.
